AI-Powered Pronunciation: My Journey to the Top of ELSA's Andromeda League

Today I discovered a language learning app on the App Store called ELSA, which coincidentally shares its name with the Ice Princess. This app focuses entirely on practicing English pronunciation to match that of native speakers. It offers a range of learning levels, from basic through intermediate to advanced, and includes a diverse selection of exercises tailored to each stage of learning. For example, there are exercises where you converse with an AI to perfect your pronunciation and listening tests where you have to choose the correct answer.

Moreover, the app periodically offers videos to watch. It categorizes the degree of difficulty into levels, and each level comes with several exercises designed to match what that level requires learning. The difficulty and ease of the exercises in the lessons vary depending on their alignment with the learning objectives and progress accordingly.

I have tried several language learning apps, and many are quite good, but I am particularly fond of this one because it targets what I'm currently struggling with — perfecting English pronunciation to sound like a native speaker. The use of AI to detect our pronunciation eliminates the need to wait for a native-speaker teacher to do the assessment. While learning with native-speaking teachers is beneficial, it can be challenging for those with unpredictable schedules to make appointments for lessons.

Hence, using an app like ELSA is a great alternative for those who want to train their language skills to native-like fluency without the need for face-to-face lessons with native speakers, which can be expensive and hard to schedule. I used the app extensively until it placed me in something called the Andromeda League — I'm not sure what that is, but I presume it's a league for beginners, and I ranked first probably because I used it the most, practicing for 56 minutes that day, although I'm uncertain if it's related to the score.
