Online classes and homework submissions - I was all in, completely hooked on the joy of drawing and eager to learn endlessly about the unfamiliar. I'm definitely not the sort to learn in solitude; I thrive on others' experiences as much as my own.

I learned to see objects in 3D, to understand line weight – it was all brand new. And then there was CMYK color theory. For non-English speakers, I'd recommend checking out Class101. Right now, it's just 19 bucks a month, though homework submissions require the full course. But for solid basics, you should complement with other sites. New Masters Academy is a bit tough to crack, in my opinion.

Some other sites are easier to navigate, but not every platform is a good fit for me. I had instances of nodding off mid-lesson with some. But with the Korean course, I saw my skills leap forward from where they were.

• Gumroad is less a school and more a marketplace for varied mini-courses. Pick what interests you; however, it lacks a structured curriculum, leaving you to figure out your learning path.
